How to Puff / Pop Amaranth

Amaranth is a powerhouse of nutrients and it is easy to prepare amaranth popcorn in less than 10 minutes. It is a quick snack, cereal and an add on to a lot of foods.

  • Heavy bottom high sided saucepan / pot
  • Large holed Sieve or a strainer
  • Bowl



  • Heat the pot first. Use a heavy bottomed saucepan / pot.
  • Sprinkle a few drops of water on the pan. If water forms bubbles right away, the pan is ready.
  • Reduce the heat to medium high.
  • Sprinkle about a tablespoon of seeds on the pan and let the seeds puff.
  • Shake the pan constantly to ensure the seeds pop evenly.
  • Take care not to burn the popped seeds and transfer as soon as pops reduce.
  • Repeat to pop all the seeds.
  • Pour the popped seeds through the sieve to filter burnt or un-popped seeds.


Shake the pan frequently so all the seeds are popped evenly.
You may have to discard the first couple of batches if the pan is too hot or not hot enough. In both the cases, seeds will burn.
Do not cover the pan. Since the seeds pop within seconds, covering the pan is not necessary.
What to do with popped Amaranth Seed?
Once you have a batch of popped amaranth you have many culinary options in which to put them to use!
I love crunchy I just start adding the popped amaranth to everything. Simply get creative!
I enjoy popped amaranth most as a cereal and in place of rice puffs in a whole food energy bars.
Make popped/puffed Amaranth Cereal and serve with plain yogurt or nut milk.
Add crunch to salad with a tablespoons or two of popped amaranth.
Stir popped amaranth into a pancake mix to increase nutrient density.
Use in place of popped rice in homemade granola bars/energy balls.
